Prokon Strut

efficiently optimise and design basic steel members under axial stress

Prokon Strut is a specialised structural analysis software tool for designing and optimising steel members subjected to axial stress. Offering advanced functionalities, it seamlessly integrates as a post-processor with Prokon’s Sumo modules, allowing engineers to analyze and refine these structural elements efficiently.

With a primary focus on axial forces, Prokon Strut provides precise outcomes, enabling engineers to optimise designs and evaluate sections with confidence. Its interactive input mode facilitates rapid design iterations and thorough member checks, ensuring robust and reliable structural solutions.

Eliminate Manual Calculation Errors

Prokon Strut automates axial tension and compression checks, removing the need for tedious hand calculations and reducing the risk of overlooking critical failure modes such as buckling.

Ensure Reliable Code Compliance

It applies the appropriate design code rules based on section type, slenderness, and end conditions, ensuring consistent compliance with SANS 10162, Eurocode 3, AISC, and other recognised standards.

Streamline Structural Design Workflows

Prokon Strut integrates directly with Prokon SUMO, allowing engineers to import axial forces effortlessly and verify members without re-entering data—saving time and improving accuracy.

STRUT USE CASE

Challenge

An engineering firm was designing a lightweight industrial roof structure that included multiple axial bracing members in both tension and compression. The project required fast, accurate verification of these members according to SANS 10162, with consideration for varying lengths, slenderness, and end conditions. To maintain an efficient workflow, the solution also needed to integrate directly with the structural model developed in Prokon SUMO.

Solution

The roof structure was modelled and analysed in Prokon SUMO, and axial force results were exported directly to Prokon Strut. Within Strut, the engineer verified each member’s capacity under axial load, including buckling checks for compression members. The module allowed for customisation of end restraints and member lengths, and enabled batch processing of different section profiles to identify the most efficient, code-compliant solutions – all according to SANS 10162.

Results

The engineer completed the bracing design with a 60% reduction in design time, achieving full compliance with SANS 10162. The ability to test multiple sections quickly led to optimised material use and lighter steel members. Integration with SUMO ensured data consistency and eliminated duplicate input, while the clear, code-referenced output report supported review and approval with confidence.
